Two Hadassah Medical Organization (HMO) pediatric cardiac surgeons, Dr. Eli Milgalter and Dr. Bishar Marzooka, just collaborated to repair the heart of a four-year-old boy from the Jerusalem suburb of Shuafat. Collaboration is not so unusual in surgery--except that Milgalter is a Jewish surgeon from Jerusalem, and Marzooka is a Palestinian surgeon who comes through the daily checkpoints from Bethlehem.

Hadassah Austria, Hadassah France, and Hadassah U.K., are proud contributors to the purchase of a new state-of-the-art rehabilitation system recently installed in the Rehabilitation Department at Hadassah University Hospital at Mount Scopus. Known as the ‘Loko System Treadmill’ and produced in Switzerland, this sophisticated piece of equipment is specially produced for locomotive therapy.

At the Hadassah Medical Organization (HMO) in Jerusalem medicine knows no borders. Every year thousands of patients from various countries in the region turn to Hadassah for hope and help. They are treated alongside patients from the Mediterranean Basin, Europe, South America and the United States. Hadassah International facilitates this medical bridge among nations. This week a 22-year old Cypriot in a deep coma for two weeks, was flown to Jerusalem and successfully treated by HMO specialists.

The world reacted with horror at the news that many of the victims brought to Hadassah Hospital, after the bombing on August 19th, 2003, were children and infants. The skill and dedication of the Hadassah staff saved many lives that would have been lost without their expertise and experience. Hadassah International volunteers expressed their pride in the work of the Hospitals, and intensified their efforts to support the Hadassah Medical Organization.

Shoshana Gottlieb, mother of four, was riding home from work with her colleagues. She had just finished eating an orange and bent down to place the peels in the plastic bag at her feet when terrorists opened fire on her van. Shoshana realized quickly she was hit and could not move her legs. She arrived at the Hadassah Hospital in critical condition.

Proclaiming "It’s Not A Miracle -- It’s Hadassah," Hadassah International at its annual conference in London, May 11-12, celebrated 20 years of "building bridges to nations through medicine," together with the Hadassah Medical Organization (HMO), and honored its founder Bernice S. Tannenbaum.

Hadassah Luxembourg NGO officially announced its support of a new project on AIDS research and clinical work in Ethiopia. This project will focus on AIDS prevention, treatment and training under the direction of Professor Shlomo Ma'ayan, head, Hadassah AIDS Center in Jerusalem. For the past 10 years, Hadassah University Hospital AIDS Center has been deeply involved in the Ethiopian AIDS scene and has collaborated with the Black Lion Hospital/Tekel Hymanot Clinic in Addis Abeba.
