A little less than 24 hours ago Dr. Yuval Weiss, Deputy Director of the 700-bed Hadassah Medical Center in Ein Kerem, ran into the office of Ron Krumer, Director of External Affairs, and said: “It's the prime minister!,” and ran outside. It took Krumer a few seconds before he realized that this wasn't just another courtesy visit. As he was running downstairs to the hospital’s trauma unit, he began to prepare himself for a very long night. The trauma unit was quiet. Two surgeons and a nurse were in the finishing stages of treating another victim of a car accident. By all outward appearances, it was just another evening in the trauma unit. Within a few minutes, doctors, nurses and others arrived and started to prepare the unit’s “VIP suite” for the most important official in the state of Israel, Prime Minister Ariel Sharon. Outside in Ben Gurion Square, the hospital’s entrance, security people were setting up the area which was still quiet, as reporters started to trickle in. It

Hadassah France, under the presidency of Doctor Sydney Ohana, held its first event of the Paris season on September 12: a fund-raising dinner at the residence of Israeli Ambassador to France H.E. Nissim Zvili. Professor Shlomo Mor-Yosef addressed the audience of 100 donors on HMO’s latest achievements, noting that after the trying years of the intifada, Hadassah was turning its attention now to children, in particular those with chronic diseases. Marcia Pinskier, Community Relations Officer for Hadassah Australia in Melbourne, has been appointed a Commissioner on the Victoria Multicultural Commission, a statutory body established by the government of Victoria. The Commission, under the domain of the Premier of Victoria, the Honorable Mr. Steve Bracks, has as its mandate to ensure that all ethnic groups in the community participate in the social, economic, cultural, and political life of the community. As one of Ms. Pinskier's first duties, she was asked to serve on a judging panel for the United National Association of Australia Media Peace Awards.

“Young Hadassah Party Night,” an evening of music and dancing and raising money for children, brought out about 250 Australian young people. The event was jointly sponsored by Hadassah Australia and Access, a not-for-profit organization which helps integrate individuals with disabilities into the community. The flyer promoted the event by advertising, “HIMRA & Access: Caring for Kids—Australia, Israel, and Around the World.”

Hadassah Holland supporters gathered in the Hague this fall at the residence of Eytan Margalit, the Israeli Ambassador to Holland, to hear a musical recital and Dr. David Zangen, pediatrician and Director of HMO’s Endocrinology Clinic. Dr. Zangen spoke about the work of the Center for Children with Chronic Diseases (CCCD), especially focusing on juvenile diabetes. A prominent Jewish magazine in Holland interviewed Dr. Zangen and plans to publish an article about his work and his visit to Holland.

Hadassah United Kingdom’s newly launched PATH Committee held its inaugural function with featured speaker Dr. Zvi Israel of HMO’s Department of Neurosurgery. PATH was formed to support Dr. Israel’s research into Parkinson’s disease. Dr. Israel spoke to the audience of approximately 100 people about his work in trying to alleviate the symptoms of this debilitating illness.

When Dr. Yoram Weiss, Assistant Director of HMO’s Intensive Care Unit, and Dr. Rahwi (Ruhi) Hashem, an Arab physician who trained at Hadassah, came to Vienna to present “Hadassah as an Island of Peace and Sanity” to the prestigious Bruno Kreisky Forum of International Dialogue, Hadassah Austria sponsored a fundraising dinner. Hadassah Austria’s aim was to raise money to fund a one-year scholarship for a Palestinian doctor at HMO.
